OpenAI Details Voice-First Hardware and Custom Silicon Strategy

OpenAI President Greg Brockman has confirmed a formal pivot toward consumer hardware, detailing a multi-device ecosystem powered by custom infrastructure.

OpenAI is pivoting from software-only interfaces to a multi-device hardware ecosystem. In a July 29 interview, President Greg Brockman outlined the company’s strategy for a “family of devices” designed to shift user interactions away from keyboards and mice toward voice-first computing. The hardware push aligns with the recent release of GPT-5.5 and represents a massive capital commitment to physical consumer computing.

Initial Hardware and Custom Silicon

OpenAI executed its first hardware release on July 15 with the Codex Micro, a physical interface built in partnership with Work Louder. The $230 mechanical macropad features a joystick, a rotary dial, and six agent keys that use RGB lighting to signal agent states. White indicates idle, blue indicates thinking, and green signals completion. The initial inventory depleted within 12 hours. Secondary market prices reached $1,850.

To support the compute demands of widespread device integration, OpenAI partnered with Broadcom to develop custom AI silicon. Project Jalapeño will reduce the company’s reliance on external chip suppliers. The infrastructure plan targets the deployment of 10 gigawatts of custom silicon by 2029.

The hardware pipeline extends beyond developer accessories into personal ambient computing. The ecosystem centers on voice functionality, which Brockman categorized as the optimal interface for intuitive model interaction.
