OpenAI Acquires Hiro to Boost ChatGPT Financial Reasoning

OpenAI has acquihired the Hiro Finance team to integrate advanced personal finance simulation and mathematical verification tools into ChatGPT.

OpenAI acquired the AI personal finance startup Hiro to integrate deterministic mathematical reasoning directly into ChatGPT. The deal is structured as an acquihire that brings specialized engineering talent to OpenAI’s vertical applications division. For developers building financial tooling, the acquisition signals a shift toward embedding rigorous math verification natively into foundational models.

Acquisition Terms and Application Sunset

The standalone Hiro Finance application is shutting down. The platform stopped accepting new signups on April 13, 2026. The application will stop functioning entirely on April 20. Existing users have until May 13 to export their data. All user information will be permanently deleted from Hiro’s servers after the export deadline. No customer data is transferring to OpenAI.

The transaction brings approximately 10 employees to OpenAI. This group includes co-founders Ethan Bloch and Rushabh Doshi. Financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed.

Deterministic Math Capabilities

Hiro launched its flagship AI tool five months prior to the acquisition as an AI Personal CFO. The platform managed over $1 billion in user assets by focusing strictly on high-precision financial modeling. Its architecture prioritized scenario simulation over conversational generation. Users modeled complex savings, debt, and investment scenarios based on salary and expense inputs.

The core technical differentiator was a mathematical verification layer. Large language models frequently fail at multi-step arithmetic because they predict text rather than computing formulas. Hiro designed a system allowing users to double-check the accuracy of the underlying math. The approach specifically addresses the numerical weaknesses that cause AI models to hallucinate financial projections. Integrating this verification engine into ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise tiers provides a reliable mechanism for enterprise financial planning.

Strategic Fintech Expansion

This transaction marks OpenAI’s 15th acquisition in a single year and its second recent purchase in the financial sector. The company previously acquired the investment application Roi in October 2025. The Hiro team joins OpenAI’s vertical applications division. This unit focuses on delivering domain-specific capabilities to business customers.

The incoming team brings significant consumer finance architecture experience. Bloch previously built the automated savings application Digit, which sold to Oportun in 2021 for $213 million. Doshi previously served as a product leader at Digit and worked at Facebook. OpenAI is utilizing these targeted acquisitions to build a fintech moat around its enterprise suite. If you currently rely on custom function calling to connect ChatGPT to external calculators, native support for deterministic computation changes your integration architecture.

If you build financial AI applications, audit your dependency on external mathematical APIs. OpenAI’s integration of deterministic math engines into ChatGPT sets a new baseline for numerical reliability. You will need to differentiate your application on complex workflow automation and proprietary data integrations rather than basic arithmetic accuracy.
