Native Slide Generation Enters ChatGPT Canvas via NextSlide Buy

OpenAI has finalized its acquisition of NextSlide, bringing native presentation authoring capabilities to its core chatbot platform. The deal, which officially closed in March 2026 but remained unannounced until August, sees the entire NextSlide engineering team transition to OpenAI. The startup’s standalone prompt-to-deck service has been shuttered, routing existing traffic to a static goodbye page.

Integration With ChatGPT Canvas

NextSlide specializes in converting unstructured information like rough notes and research documents into formatted, editable slide decks. OpenAI plans to integrate this rendering engine directly into the ChatGPT Canvas workspace. Canvas currently handles document writing and code editing, but lacks a dedicated graphical interface for presentation assembly.

If you build enterprise generative tools, this changes the baseline expectations for document generation. Competing platforms are already deploying AI models across Excel and PowerPoint, bridging the gap between chat interfaces and standard office formats. NextSlide provides OpenAI with a proprietary authoring surface, bypassing the need to generate Python scripts or rely on external API integrations to output slides.

NextSlide founder Ahmed Beshry now serves as a Product lead on the ChatGPT team. Beshry brings a track record of scaling AI-driven workflows, having previously sold Caper AI to Instacart for $350 million.

The NextSlide purchase follows a rapid sequence of targeted acquisitions, including analytics provider Statsig for $1.1 billion, personal finance apps like Hiro, and Jony Ive’s hardware startup io for $6.5 billion. Together, these acquisitions point toward a unified desktop agent ecosystem designed to rival traditional software suites.
