Mistral AI has closed a €3 billion Series D at roughly a €20 billion valuation, per The New York Times, with Samsung leading the round and ASML among the major new shareholders. The raise, reported by Bloomberg in June when talks valued the company at about €20 billion, nearly doubles the €11.7 billion valuation from Series C a year ago and brings Mistral’s total capital raised since its 2023 founding to around €6 billion. It is being called the largest equity round ever by a European tech company.

The Investor List Is the Strategy

The most telling detail is who wrote the checks: Samsung led, and ASML, the Dutch lithography monopoly, took a major stake. Mistral’s most important investors are now its own semiconductor supply chain, which means the company building “sovereign AI” for Europe has locked in preferential access to the chips and equipment everyone else is fighting for. Combine that with Mistral’s expanding data center business (it raised $830 million in March specifically for a site near Paris), and the picture is a vertically-integrated European AI stack: European models, European silicon partnerships, European data centers, marketed as the continent’s answer to US frontier labs.

What ~€20 Billion Buys, and What It Has to Prove

The valuation doubles in a year without Mistral having released a model that leads the frontier benchmarks, which makes this a bet on positioning as much as performance: European sovereignty demand, enterprise customers who want a non-US vendor, and Samsung’s strategic interest in AI silicon demand. Mistral’s task is to convert that positioning into revenue and a technical breakthrough; its release cadence through 2026 has been steady but not chart-topping. For European developers and enterprises, though, the practical read is positive: a well-capitalized, Europe-headquartered alternative with deep semiconductor relationships raises the odds of real price and capability competition on the continent, whatever happens to the sovereignty narrative.
