Einride and Lidl Put the First Cab-Less Autonomous Truck on German Public Roads

A truck with no cab at all is now making regular commercial deliveries on German public roads. Per Reuters and Einride’s announcement, the Swedish company and supermarket chain Lidl deployed the first cab-less autonomous truck in regular commercial service in Germany, running electric deliveries up to three times a day between a Lidl distribution point near Edermünde in Hesse and a nearby store, at SAE Level 4 autonomy within its approved operating conditions. It is reportedly the first such deployment by any food retailer in the country.
No Cab Changes What the Truck Is
Removing the cab is not a styling choice; it is a statement about the maturity of the system. A cab means a human can take over. No cab means the vehicle was approved to operate, within a defined route and conditions, with no human fallback at all, carrying freight on public roads. Einride’s design has always been cab-less by intent, which forced German regulators to evaluate the safety case without the assumption of human intervention. The route is short and fixed, but the regulatory precedent is not: Germany approving routine cab-less commercial freight creates the template for scaling to longer routes between distribution centers, where the economics are strongest.
The European Autonomy Picture Is Filling In
This lands days after Uber and Wayve launched London’s first commercial robotaxi service, and the two deployments sketch how European autonomy is actually arriving: not one Waymo-style player scaling a single technology, but a patchwork of national approvals, route-specific operations, and vertically paired partnerships (Einride-Lidl for freight, Uber-Wayve for passengers). Freight is the pragmatic first market, and for the same reasons it was in the US: fixed routes, no passengers, and economics where removing the driver changes margins rather than comfort. The watch items are German regulator behavior as routes extend beyond the approved corridor, whether other EU states follow Germany’s approval template, and the insurance question, because a cab-less truck in an incident has no driver to blame, which makes this the cleanest real-world test yet of who pays when autonomy fails.
