Anthropic is building an in-house custom silicon team to co-design AI chips specifically for its upcoming frontier models like Claude Fable 5 and Opus 4.8.

Anthropic officially confirmed it is building a proprietary hardware unit by recruiting a dedicated AI chip design team. The August 2026 announcement ends months of speculation about the company’s silicon strategy. Anthropic is moving beyond standard GPU acceleration to co-design hardware directly alongside its frontier models.

The initiative centers on a newly formed custom silicon team tasked with improving the speed, efficiency, and scalability of inference and training workloads. This shift aligns the company with competitors like OpenAI, Meta, and Google, who all utilize proprietary accelerator architectures to reduce dependency on constrained third-party supply chains.

Hardware Co-Design Strategy

The custom chips will be explicitly co-designed for the architecture of upcoming frontier models, including the Claude 3.5 family, Claude Fable 5, and Opus 4.8. Tightly coupling the silicon to the neural network architecture allows for optimizations in memory bandwidth and tensor operations that general-purpose hardware cannot achieve.

Anthropic will maintain a multi-chip strategy during this transition. The company plans to continue utilizing hardware from Nvidia, AMD, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud. In April, Amazon announced Anthropic would spend over $100 billion over the next decade on AWS infrastructure, including extensive use of AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips. In July, Anthropic reportedly signed a $19 billion data center lease with TeraWulf to secure reliable power for future training clusters.

While Anthropic has not named a fabrication partner for its internal designs, earlier reports indicated exploratory talks with Samsung Electronics to support its custom silicon push.
