Anthropic's IPO Targets Mid-October Marketing and a Pre-Midterm Listing
Reuters reports Anthropic is expected to begin marketing its IPO in mid-October at the earliest and list days before the November midterms, with its valuation hinging on a $190-200 billion 2028 revenue forecast.
Anthropic’s path to the public markets has a timeline. Reuters reported September 4 that the company is expected to begin marketing its IPO in mid-October at the earliest and complete the listing days before the November midterms, after confidentially filing in June to take an early lead over OpenAI in the race to become the first major AI lab to go public. The company’s last private round valued it at roughly $965 billion.
The Number the Valuation Hangs On
The interesting detail in the reporting is what underwrites that private mark: sources tell Investing.com the IPO valuation hinges on a $190-200 billion revenue forecast for 2028. For context, Anthropic’s run rate was around $9 billion at the end of 2025 and reportedly passed $47 billion by May, so the public-market case requires roughly a fourfold increase in two years. That is not impossible in this market, and this week alone Anthropic shipped Fable 5.1 with pricing that directly targets agent workloads and announced a $35 billion Lambda cloud commitment, but it means the IPO prospectus will be, in effect, an agent-adoption forecast. Public investors will be underwriting enterprise agent deployments, not model quality.
Why the Midterms Timing Is Not a Coincidence
Listing days before a US election is a defensive choice as much as an offensive one. An AI company priced on growth wants to complete its offering before any post-election regulatory re-rating, and both major parties enter those midterms with AI policy unresolved: the G20’s light-touch principles on one side, the EU’s hard obligations and a multistate investigation into OpenAI on the other. Whichever way those break, a completed listing locks in the raise. For OpenAI, reportedly valued even higher but still private, Anthropic going first sets the public comparables for the entire sector; whatever multiple the market pays for a $47 billion run rate becomes the number every board conversation about AI company valuations starts from.
