Adobe Opens Firefly Custom Models to Creators
Adobe has launched Firefly Custom Models in public beta, letting creators train its image generator on their own artwork and styles.
Adobe has opened Firefly Custom Models to creators in public beta, turning a previously enterprise-heavy capability into a live workflow in the Firefly app. The product matters because it lets you train Adobe’s image generator on your own assets, then generate images that preserve a consistent subject, illustration style, brand look, or photography aesthetic.
Product scope
Firefly Custom Models are trained from your own image set and used inside Firefly’s Text to image workflow. Adobe supports training for either a subject or a style, which is the key distinction if you need identity consistency versus broader visual direction.
The creator-facing workflow starts from Firefly’s custom model training flow. Adobe presents specific use cases, including lifestyle photography, photoshoots of a person, still life photography, illustrated character, iconography, illustrations, isometric and 3D graphics, brand expressions, and backgrounds for product shots.
This is a different product position from Adobe’s 2025 rollout, which centered on enterprise production pipelines, GenStudio integration, and API access. The March 19 release moves customization closer to the individual creator workflow, where the value is repeatability rather than one-off prompting.
Training workflow
Adobe’s training requirements are compact by design. You upload 10 to 30 images in JPG or PNG, with a minimum resolution of 1000 pixels and a maximum aspect ratio of 16:9.
Adobe also scores the dataset before training. The Model Score runs from 1 to 100, and Adobe recommends a score of 85 or higher for a strong training set.

Firefly can auto-generate a model title, description, sample prompt, tags, and captions. You review and edit those before training, which matters because prompt-model alignment is part of the system design. If you work on prompting with examples or any other input-sensitive AI workflow, the pattern is familiar: cleaner supervision produces more controllable outputs.
Training is not instant. Adobe says it can take a few hours. After training, you can preview and test the model before publishing it for use in Firefly, and Adobe also supports sharing models for use in Express.
Generation controls
Once a custom model is trained, generation uses the same kinds of control surfaces you would expect in a modern image system: aspect ratio, content type, style references, effects, and composition. The difference is that these controls now operate on top of a personalized model instead of a generic base model.
For creative teams, this is the operational point. Prompting alone rarely maintains a stable character sheet, icon family, or campaign visual language over many outputs. Adobe is productizing a middle layer between plain prompting and full model development, similar in spirit to the way teams choose between fine-tuning and retrieval when they need durable behavior from text systems.
Quality and dataset discipline
Adobe’s best-practice guidance is unusually concrete. Captions should be descriptive, prompts should closely match the training captions, and identity preservation improves when the prompt stays close to the trained concept.
If you build AI systems in other domains, this mirrors a broader pattern in context engineering: the model performs best when the conditioning data is explicit, consistent, and tightly scoped. Firefly’s Model Score formalizes that principle for image training.
Rights and control boundaries
Adobe requires users to confirm they have rights and permissions for uploaded assets. This is central to the release because Firefly Custom Models are built on user-provided material, not just prompts.
Adobe also positions custom models as private by default, and the assets used to train them are not used to train Adobe’s general Firefly models. For developers and creative ops teams, this is the product boundary to pay attention to. You are not just getting a personalization feature, you are getting a separate training lane with different data handling expectations.
Output formats
Adobe supports downloading generated outputs as JPEG and SVG files (beta), with an important constraint. SVG export applies only to illustrations, not photographic generations, and Adobe notes that these are still image-model outputs converted to SVG. They can contain many anchor points, may hallucinate, and do not yet produce editable strokes.
That limitation matters if your downstream workflow expects production-ready vectors. For concepting, moodboards, and rough ideation, SVG beta can help. For clean design-system assets, you should still treat it as a starting point rather than final artwork.
Access implications
The March 19 event is the public beta opening for creators. Some Adobe documentation still includes enterprise entitlement language, which suggests the platform is expanding from its earlier enterprise foundation rather than replacing it outright.
If you manage brand systems, character libraries, or repeatable campaign art, test whether your current Firefly access includes Custom Models and prepare a curated 10 to 30 image dataset before you do anything else. Dataset quality, captions, and rights hygiene will determine the result more than prompt cleverness.
